Without Cannes win, India release of ‘Masaan’ was uncertain: Director Neeraj Ghaywanon June 28, 2015 at 6:08 am
Masaan ‘starring Sanjay Mishra and Richa Chadha is set to release in India on July 24 the Director Neeraj Ghaywan, however, says a statement of India would have been difficult had the film did not win prizes in the prestigious film festival Cannes.
“We did not go to Cannes just to gain some appreciation and back. We received tremendous buzz because our victory Cannes without this, maybe we could not have released the movie,” Neeraj told the media at the launch trailer for the film.
“Secondly, the victory helped sell the film in several countries, which is a necessity for a film like ‘Masaan’.
Affirming that film festivals were “not only means to showcase their films,” he said: “It is also a market like Marché du Film de Cannes, where his film to numerous buyers from places like Spain, Italy will be screened, among others. And many of these buyers have already bought ‘Masaan “and will be released in those countries.”
The film took home two awards at Cannes, including a director Neeraj debut prize.
